The Permanent Representative of Portugal to the OSCE, Ambassador Jorge Lobo de Mesquita, presents his credentials to the Secretary-General of the OSCE, Thomas Greminger. Vienna, 8 January 2019
Welcome to the official website of the Permanent Representation of Portugal to the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
The information presented in this website aims at providing some essential elements about Portugal, as well as a brief insight on the work developed by this Permanent Representation.
Portugal is a Participating State of the OSCE since its foundation at the Helsinki Conference for Security and Co-operation in Europe (1973-1975). It is worth noting that the Carnation Revolution took place precisely in 1974, when Portugal started fostering its democratic institutions, based on fundamental freedoms and respect for the rule-of-law.
In fact, the promotion of democracy and human rights are at the core of OSCE's third dimension, which, alongside the politico-military, and the economic and environmental dimensions, constitutes the key concept of comprehensive security of the organization.
In a world of increasing geographical interconnections and intertwined issues, the OSCE comprehensive approach to security keeps, with no doubt, its validity.
As an intergovernmental organization, the OSCE also recognizes in its work the important role of civil society, and I hope, therefore, that this website can be useful, raising the interest for this vast multilateral forum.
